If they ever did.
What is a locust?
Its head, a grain of corn; its neck, the hinge
of a knife;
Its horns, a bit of thread; its chest is smooth
Its body is like a knife handle;
Its hock, a saw; its spittle, ink;
Its underwings, clothing for the dead.
On the ground—it is laying eggs;
In flight—it is like the clouds.
Approaching the ground, it is rain glittering in
Lighting on a plant, it becomes a pair of
Walking, it becomes a razor;
Desolation walks with it.
Pilot William C. Hopson of the U.S. Mail Service in Winter Flying Clothing
Regularly scheduled airmail service first began in the United States on May 15, 1918. “Wild Bill” Hopson remains one of the more colorful of the early airmail pilots. A former cab driver who survived several close calls (once landing upside down in a cornfield), he perished when his plane crashed during a storm in 1928. Check out his “Pilot Story” at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum.
Is there a tumblr rule that says if you post a Comic Sans slideshow, you have to make sure that you have to be wrong is an embarrassingly earnest but cluelessly over-generalizing way? If you try to post a relevant, insightful, innovative, and worthwhile PowerPoint, does tumblr give you an error message? I’m envisioning a message like “Error 42345: Lacks half-digested bits of wisdom from your first eye-opening [identity politics of you choice or lit theory, my personal go-to toolbox of Interweb jackassery] course.”
